Turn Your Hobby into a Job - Wolfgang Career Coaching
Turn Your Hobby into a Job - Wolfgang Career Coaching What do you like to do in your free time? Photography? Gardening? Spending time outdoors? Cooking? Our hobbies can make us very happy. We enjoy the time we spend doing them, but can they translate into our careers? The answer is . . . it depends. Yes Some individuals can translate their hobby into their career. Consider the following example. My client, Mary, loves photography. She has spent years perfecting the craft. She has purchased an expensive, high-end professional camera along with the latest version of Photoshop. Her friends and family members ask her to be the photographer at family gatherings, weddings, or the family photo shoot. Starting a business as a photographer is something that she would love doing. Launching the business, crafting the marketing messages, keeping a flexible schedule, and making money doing something she loves truly appeals to her. No Using the same example from above. Mary loves photography, but the pressure of needing to make money in a business related to her passion causes extreme amounts of stress. Taking the pictures is what appeals to her, but launching the business is not something that interests her or is something she is skilled in. If the business fails, it may cause Mary to view her photography skills in a negative light. The flexible schedule seems appealing, but she doesnât want to work on the weekends. Two different individuals two different results. For some, turning a hobby into a career is a lifelong dream, allowing them to work every day in an area they love. For others, turning their hobby into a career takes the fun out of that hobby and that past love is now work. There are many considerations when deciding to turn a hobby into a career. Below are just a few considerations: Can you do this for a living? Is this something people will pay for? How can do you do this for a living? Do you need to start your own business or can you work for others? Can you implement this career change with your current life and maintain the lifestyle you want? Will you enjoy doing the non-hobby or business aspects of the job? How will this impact your love for this hobby? If you are thinking of taking that hobby and using it for the next step in your career consider the questions above and think through the entire decision-making process. It makes sense in some cases and for others some hobbies are best left as hobbies.

Applying for the NHS Scientist Training Programme, 2017 University of Manchester Careers Blog
Applying for the NHS Scientist Training Programme, 2017 This post has been updated for 2018 and can be viewed HERE 2017 STP opened 16th January, closes Monday 13th February at 5pm The NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) is open for applications! Thousands of scientists and engineers of all disciplines work for the NHS, and the STP is how they recruit most of their Clinical Science trainees each year. Many Manchester students and postgrads apply to the STP, so we update this blog post each year to help you navigate the process. We will also update this post over the next few months when there is new information to share with you. N.B. Some of the resources mentioned in this post may only be accessible by University of Manchester students. If you are not a Manchester student, have a chat with your own Careers Service about the support available to you. UPDATE (Added 7/2/2017) Scotland operate their own recruitment programme for Clincial Scientist Trainees and you can find details on the NHS Education for Scotland website. They tend to advertise their vacancies after England and Wales, and I spotted today that they have started advertising for Medical Physics trainees. They have 9-10 vacancies in the Grampian region and the closing date is the 1st March. Bookmark this page if you are interested in training north of the border! UPDATE (Added 3/2/2017) I have updated a short slide presentation with some extra tips on tackling the application form and online tests. If you are a University of Manchester Biological Sciences student, you should have been emailed the link already by your School. If you are a University of Manchester graduate, contact the Careers Information team to obtain access. If neither of these apply, contact your own uni careers service cos they may have their own special help too! Tips for applying You have until 5pm on Monday 13th February at the latest to submit your online application and (for anyone who isnât an in-service applicant) until 5pm on Wednesday 15th February to complete two online tests â" but get in as soon as possible as applications are reviewed as they come in. The National School of Healthcare Science website has so much information for applicants it can be overwhelming â" however, if you want the best chance of getting into these super-competitive posts, youâll hoover it all up and use the advice in your application. A good place to start is by reading the STP Frequently Asked Questions for Applicants 2017. The list of specialisms by location will be updated throughout the application window, and includes a new specialism for this year, Andrology. The list was updated 6 times last year, so check back regularly for additional vacancies (as of 27 Feb, there were 255 posts across 24 specialisms). Youâll have to inspect each specialism individually, but as itâs better to focus on a specific specialism in your application, it does make sense. (Applying for lots of different specialisms just to train in a specific location has never been recommended, never mind the fact itâd be tricky to tailor your application for multiple specialisms given the word count for each section!). We were told last year that only 3 candidates are interviewed per post, so the competition is red hot. Youâll therefore need some great answers to the essay questions, so set aside some time to do your research, think about your experience and craft your answers â" you need to do yourself justice here. Online application form The online application form is near on identical to last year, so if you applied last year, you know what to expect. Frustratingly, there is still no easy way to preview all the questions before you start to fill it out so weve had a sneaky peek for you. Top Tip As you go through the online form for the first time, you canât advance on to the next page without completing the mandatory sections. However, you can review and change most of the answers once you get to the end â" just donât press âSubmitâ until you have filled it all in and checked it! There are lots of mandatory sections, and once you fill in some answers, other mandatory questions may appear. Be prepared to answer A LOT of questions about eligibility, fitness to practise etc before you even get to the bit where you fill in your education! You also need to supply the details of three referees, one of whom must be your most recent education supervisor (or line manager, if you have graduated and are in work). When your application form is read by the people who will shortlist candidates for interview, they will not be able to see the choices that candidates have made. Hence, if you choose two different specialisms your application will go to both short listing panels, who will not know if you have ranked that specialism as first or second choice. They also will not see any candidate names â" it is done completely blind. Essay questions The form asks the same four questions as last year and, again, you are allowed a maximum of 250 words per answer. An implicit test here is whether you can write accurately AND concisely. 1. Your knowledge, motivation and commitment to the Training Programme In less than 250 words, please state why you have applied for the Healthcare Scientist Training Programme. Give details of your motivation, suitability and future career development or aspirations. Describe what actions you have undertaken to increase your knowledge, experience and understanding of healthcare science and the training programme for your chosen specialism(s). 2. YOUR COMMITMENT TO HEALTHCARE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY In less than 250 words, please describe your commitment, interest and enjoyment of scientific practice and technology. Please provide examples of how you seek to develop, improve and adopt innovative processes in your work or studies. 3. VALUES AND BEHAVIOURS The NHS Constitution* values and behaviours are paramount to the delivery of healthcare services. In less than 250 words please describe how within your own experience you would display these qualities. (*Have you read it yet? You can find it here) 4. TEAM WORKING AND LEADERSHIP In less than 250 words describe occasions where you have worked as part of a team and outline the skills you used to benefit the outputs of that team. Also, please describe a situation or situations when you have taken the opportunity to lead others and identify how you managed any challenges that arose. Thereâs help on completing application forms on our website, including a useful hand-out. We definitely recommend taking the Context-Action-Result approach to structure your answers, to help keep them concise. Always take time to proof read your answers before you submit them (a good tip is to read them backwards to spot typos). University of Manchester students and recent graduates can get assistance from the Applications Advice service in the Atrium in University Place and also look out for Appointments in your School. Online tests After you submitted your online application, you have two tests to complete before the deadline, and you have to get through each of these for your application to get considered. The tests are numerical reasoning and logical reasoning, and you can practise here. We guess theyâre using logical reasoning tests to find people who are good at spotting patterns and trends (useful for diagnostics) as well as deductive logic. These tests can be very challenging if youre not familiar with them, so do take time to practice, especially as only one attempt is permitted per email address! Previous applicants tell us that with practice you can learn how to answer the logical reasoning questions accurately, so it is worth working your way through example tests. What is the next one in the sequence? You might also want to check out the psychometric test info on our website, including practice test materials. We have a new resource this year, Graduates First, which provides worked solutions for the answers you get wrong in its tests. Iâd definitely suggest using a proper calculator when completing the numerical reasoning test and not the one on your phone. Youâll be able to do the STP tests at any time until the closing date but donât leave it until the last minute: what would you do if you suddenly lost your internet connection or the site crashed with the weight of all the last minute tests being taken. If you have a disability or a condition like dyslexia, you can request extra time to complete these tests. Youll need to send evidence to support your request at least 3 working days before the aptitude tests deadline date i.e. the 11th February! If you fail to notify the team before the deadline date, you may not be granted the extra time you need. See Step 5 on the NSHCS Applying to the progamme page FAQs about psychometric tests on the Careers Service website Being optimistic If youre one of the lucky ones who gets invited to interview, you might want to check out the interview dates for your specialism and keep the date free looks like theres no flexibility, so move heaven and earth to get there if you get invited. Good luck we are rooting for you! All Graduate Postgrad-highlighted Postgraduate Undergraduate applications jobs NHS

8 workplace predictions for 2018
8 work environment expectations for 2018 8 work environment expectations for 2018 The finish of a year and the promising beginning of another lap around the sun can regularly feel like a chance to roll out energizing improvements, both by and by and expertly. From considering an intense move across ventures to the appeal of getting your MBA or at long last diving in and requesting the raise you merit, January 1 may feel like an impetus to making greater satisfaction in your career. Before you go out on a limb that into work sheets, work alarms, graduate school applications, or introductory letter composing courses, profession specialists recommend a cautious report into what the following a year are anticipated to present to the workforce. Not sure where to begin your profound plunge? Here, industry masters share their understanding for 2018:The number of new businesses will keep on declineit might be enticing to guide your heading onto the way of new companies. Ready with development and commonly increasingly permissive on customary meanings of work, the way of lif e of best in class independent companies is frequently inventive and open. Yet, authoritative and social plan master Jessica Higgins noticed the negative atmosphere conditions for new market contestants makes it significantly more hard to turn into a business person. Truth be told, the United States Census Bureau found a decrease in the primary year for tech-centered organizations in 2016, with a normal continuation all through 2018.Given the proceeded with political vulnerability and changes that help the ultra-rich, boundaries to new business creation will keep on expanding. New organizations will keep on declining, Higgins says.Does this mean you ought to be disappointed by the possibility of a bid for employment from a maturing association? Unquestionably not - Higgins just recommends developing as much data about past financing and posing pointed inquiries about the eventual fate of the organization before marking the business contract.Companies will offer progressively remote work alternatives and flexibilitySimilar to - and likely a consequence of - the uptick of specialists, examine executive and work/life master at Captivate, Heather Chigas says more organizations will offer their representatives the choice to work remotely. Truth be told, an examination directed by Captivate not long ago found that an astounding 44 percent of workers at different organizations cited the capacity to log hours any place as their top advantage. In the coming year, Chigas says associations will profit by adaptability as an approach to hold their workers. They will add more advantages and conveniences to keep their representatives cheerful. This may incorporate anything from giving their representatives summer Fridays and removing of work somewhat prior on moderate days or the capacity to telecommute all the more frequently, she says.Employers will concentrate on worker engagementIt's turning out to be increasingly more recorded that worker bliss is one of the key supporte rs of faithfulness, efficiency and adequacy. That is the reason mechanical hierarchical brain research professional and work environment master, Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D, says 2018 will welcome a proceeded and reestablished center around commitment inside offices.Over the previous scarcely any years, there has been a developing mindfulness and comprehension of the need to perceive the worker as an individual with necessities and sentiments outside of work. Top associations have set the bar with work-life balance activities and projects, she says. There will be less full-time, non-tech jobsOn normal, what number of minutes during your 9-t0-5 employment do you dream about working for yourself? Because of the adaptability and opportunity that independent open doors give - particularly to more youthful ages who haven't recommended to the shirt command of their folks or grandparents - an ever increasing number of laborers are shunning staff employments for an independent way of life. This a dditionally implies organizations are observing, as indicated by Higgins, who says temporary worker work is required to represent 43 percent of work environment openings by 2020. What does this mean? Less and less all day openings for work - except if you're a tech superstar. The just business development we see locally is in tech, which staffs at around 10 percent of the assembling economy, she clarifies. Facebook houses around 20,000 U.S. workers while General Motors used to staff well more than 200,000. With our business development to a great extent in non-work concentrated parts, we not just need to depend on our imagination AT work, we need to get entirely inventive to try and discover work. There will be an expansion in 'intrepreneurship'Never known about this type of manager? Higgins predicts you've most likely hobnobbed with a bunch of ambitious innovators without acknowledging it. She considers this kind of entrepreneurism an expectation for the future, as the agent between more seasoned methods of working and progressively current approaches. These are the individuals who left huge organizations to utilize their inventive abilities to develop, as a way stay serious as the workforce to a great extent vanishes with robotization, she says. Like Seth Godin said in his book Linchpin, don't be the best on the planet at what you do, be the just one on the planet who does what you do. I'm putting it all out there with this expectation, yet my expectation is in the key part workforce.Employers will concentrate more on social mindfulness and diversityEspecially during times of pressure that challenge bosses to take positions and give sweeping help to their representatives, regardless of their racial foundation or sexual direction, Hakim predicts organizations will have an increased consciousness of decent variety and acceptance.More organizations will hold instructional courses (both for all intents and purposes and face to face) to guarantee that all individual s from an association approach others with deference. This regard is imperative for connections with representatives, bosses, partners, and customers, she explains.Employees will be relied upon to advance with technologiesNot totally up to speed on the best in class innovative apparatuses and patterns in your industry? Time to tear open Google looking for preparing programs, as Hakim says innovation will keep on characterizing achievement and work process in coming years. As it were: innovation is the name of almost every game.Companies will keep on attempting to improve correspondence course using innovation. Workers with a mechanical range of abilities will be viewed as a unique resource for associations, she clarifies. 'New' neckline occupations will turn out to be progressively well known and pertinent in the working environment. For example, a worker who can apply fundamental innovation ability to help with different capacities across offices will be significant for organizatio ns.Employers will concentrate on wellbeing and wellnessIn expansion to being permitted to browse email from a collaborating space in Bali or Croatia or having the option to go through Fridays with your baby, putting resources into representative wellbeing is a pattern that will keep on soaring, as indicated by business visionary and self-improvement mentor Meiyoko Taylor. In addition to the fact that this is an approach to represent devotion to the general prosperity of direct reports, however Taylor says it can likewise be a keen method to draw in talent.People are getting progressively worried about their wellbeing, so it's just normal for organizations to begin giving hands on assets to suit representatives, he says. A portion of the advantages of stressing this program is the decrease in social insurance costs and an expanded degree of employment participation. Work environment stress is a colossal issue that representatives manage each day, so organizations have begun to focus on it to put resources into making an increasingly tranquil, solid, and loosening up workplace.
